Hi everyone!
Thank you for being a part of this incredible journey to bring Nommi to life. Before it became real we didn’t know who else would be as excited about our idea as we were. Now, backed by amazing 1416 people - we have come so far.
MOLDING:
1. As you remember, we had a delay with molding. Now we are happy to say that our molding partners improved our DFM (Design for Manufacturing) for the Slim and Power versions and now have begun the tooling process. We’ve optimized the inner design structure for quality, durability and hardness of the case.
2. Moreover we’ve finished tooling and have prepared the molds for Nommi Slim and Nommi Power’s SIM holder. Now we are ready to start mass production of the SIM holders.
COMPONENTS AND ELECTRONICS:
1. We are in the process of sourcing components such as raw materials for mass production, electronic components, QI coils, USBs and batteries for Nommi Slim and Nommi Power. For Nommi Slim we decided to use a high-quality Li-pol battery, and for Nommi Power we decided to use a high-density Panasonic cell 18650 Li-ion battery. Both of these batteries have UN 38.3 and MSDS certifications.
2. We have also started producing the QI wireless charger PCBA for Nommi Power:
SOFTWARE:
1. We have achieved successful results from tests of eSIM (softSIM) technology.
2. A lot of people have asked about the microSD and how to use it:
- There is a file server on our App, which allows you to share and save files using your Nommi.
- You can buy a microSD and insert it into your Nommi. This allows you to share your files locally (within Nommi’s network) and to save your photos, videos and documents on the mircoSD card. Most importantly this saves your time and data!
- All these processes are done by using Nommi App; where you can share, save and delete files.

A lot has happened since we finished our campaign in January 2018. We became a community of more than 1300 people across the globe. We’ve got pre-orders from 85 countries and learned what are the regions where many people are keen to get Nommi - USA, Singapore, HongKong, Germany, Australia are at the top of the list.
Even though we didn’t think about this in advance, we’ve been also able to find great partners among distributors (from Chile and UAE to Japan) and we’ve already achieved agreements on terms & conditions and received “go ahead” for Amazon Launchpad.
This wouldn't be possible without your consistent support and trust so we are grateful to you for being with us on this journey. We know it’s just a very start, we know we don’t know everything yet and we make mistakes sometimes, but we’re also dedicated, passionate and focused on both making Nommi an amazing product, and also making you happy by using it.
PCBA V3.0 and Firmware updates
- We’ve fixed V3.0 (PCBA) as an optimal in design and features set after debugging process;
- We’ve also updated the firmware for this version, although we’ll keep updating it further on;
- We’ve tested the efficiency of the processor and got positive results.

We’ve also done MicroSD and SIM functionality tests ourselves within core team (previously, tests were performed by our technical staff) in order to double-check that everything is working exactly as desired.
Molding development’s delay
There is 3+ weeks delay in molding process, which we were planning to finalize by the 20th of September, but as our molding partner insisted on changing some of the case design, now it seems to take more than five weeks to get to the first version of molds (called T0). Normally it doesn’t take a long time to get to the final version after T0 is ready.
As soon as our Chinese molding partners will send us samples for approval and they are ok - we’ll start mass production of Nommi cases and will also test the final product. The next stage is fulfillment and shipping.
Sim holder improvements
For better durability, we’ve decided to change the material of Sim holder from plastic to metal. How it looks like:
App, Firmware and Backend integration:
- As we’re close to the end of the development for app, firmware, and backend, we’ve started API integration for all of them. Basically, it means that we’re connecting device, application and firmware so they can “talk to each other and understand each other”.
- We’re also finalizing API integration for the backend billing system. This one is made by our company and our data-partner companies.
- We’ve just started integrating our wi-fi database of 3.5 mln wi-fi passwords with Nommi App, so you can find places with wifi on the map easily.
Box design
These are the samples of boxes we’ve made ourselves to understand which package would be the best for Nommi. We’ve tested them to find out if they can keep Nommi safe if dropped, pushed onto and so on.We’ve chosen the type that worked best and reached out to Chinese factories, so they can help us to make the boxes.
Data packages structuring
After primary data packages structure is ready, now we’ve started to work on creating data packages for multiple country destinations. We are also checking data plans of similar services to figure out what is the most convenient and popular.

Our pessimistically-realistic scenario is shipping Nommies in December 2018, but we do our best to speed up all the processes, so we can ship earlier.
Nommi Slim and Nommi Power will be shipped all together at the same time.

We know that you are really waiting for our updates and news. So we are doing our best to post updates to let you know about production process and software changes. Stay tuned!
Let’s have a look at our latest news from the production :
- We are at tooling (molding) stage of Nommi Slim. The tooling stage has several steps: T0, T1, T2 etc. As our molding is quite a simple one, we do expect that we won’t need to do multiple iterations to perfect the mold and we’ll be able to stop at T1 and start mass-production.
- We’ve started sourcing components (chipsets, leds and so on) for Nommi. Our technical lead will be in China during this period to supervise manufacturing process. Below you can find some photos from our molding factory.
- We've been planning to ship Nommies by the end of September. However, due to Chinese holidays (September, 27th - October, 8th), we have to postpone the shipment. Nevertheless, we are very happy to be so close to shipping!
- We produced final version of our PCBA fixing all defects, we’ve had in previous ones. It’s our 3rd iteration and the last one with hardware alterations.
- Now we are focusing and putting all our efforts on software integration. We are also working on activating OTA (over-the-air) updates of software on Nommi devices, which means in future Nommi can be remotely updated for better performance, functionality and added new features.

Hope you are doing well! We have a lot of good news and are happy to share them with you!
Let’s get started!
1. Production goes as planned, we are at the final stage:
- Now we are waiting for the molding. In general, molding takes 3 weeks, unless there are any troubles. As our case design is quite simple - we hope there are no delays here.
- Then we will do a test batch and start the mass production. The mass production is a short process which takes about 2-3 days.
- We decided to start the mass production of Nommi Slim first, then Nommi Power. Because Nommi Slim has relatively easier structure.
2. We have cool news for the Nommi Slim backers:
- When finalizing the design, we have optimized its case on the basis of our ODM suggestions on simplifying the tooling process. Here is the updated case structure:
- NEW: Nommi Slim will also have a powerbank mode. You can charge your mobile device with a usb-A output.
- NEW: Nommi Slim will have bigger battery capacity - 5200mAh instead of claimed 3500mAh. So you can use your Nommi Slim 1.5x times longer.
3. Changes on USB type. According to our survey, most of our backers have changed their microUSB to USB type-C. So we retooled all Nommies to use USB type-C. Nevertheless we will provide you additional adapter for microUSB.
4. Packaging for Nommi. We are in the process of choosing packaging for Nommi. Overall, we’d like to use eco-friendly materials and haven’t finalized the design yet. So if you have any suggestions, we are happy to hear from you.
5. Survey on BackerKit. We’ve got lots of questions about “survey” from you. To make things clear: we have only one survey on BackerKit, which is usually sent right after you place your order. Hi Nommi backers!
Want to share some news and let you know how’s everything. Overall, we’ve been busy to follow Nommi manufacturing and testing schedule. Going well so far! :-)
- We have added quick charge for Nommi. Now you will be able to charge your Nommi much faster than with conventional charger port. We are doing tests and will share the results on our next update.
- We finalized Nommi Slim inner structure design. Now all components are defined and placed in the shell, so the Slim version is ready for the final test assembly and then for mass-production. Here is how it looks like:
- We’ve already been working on obtaining relevant certificates for Nommi. If we were a software company, probably life would be easier for us. However, with the hardware devices and especially those involving wi-fi/LTE modules - there’s a lot of work to be done on the certification side. We expected this, so we are working on it. Will keep you posted.
- We’re getting ready to mass production. We’re about to start pre-ordering components for mass-production during the next week.
